The Waqas of the Inkas

Waqas were a central feature in Inka culture and some had astronomical uses. Certain ones had astral orientations while others displayed intentional light and shadow effects. While most waqas were destroyed in the Catholic extirpation of idolatries, many that had been carved in rock remain (see Fig. 7.1). To truly learn Inka astronomy, you need to have a much greater understanding of waqas and their function in Inka culture, astronomically and otherwise. With help from what Garcilaso de la Vega and Guaman Poma de Ayala captured in their chronicals, as well as with author Milton’s oral traditions, waqas are explored in great detail in this chapter to give you a better sense of their significance. For perspective and insight, Guaman Poma’s original drawings and the Spanish text from his plates are presented, followed by explanation and discussion in English.
