Toward an Effective Student Bodies and Students’ Movement

Student bodies or councils play a crucial role in higher education institutions by representing the rights and interests of students. However, in Oman, more than 100,000 students in higher education institutions lack organized student movements and are subject to university administrations. This lack of voice representation and knowledge has negative impacts on the development of the country and government decisions, as well as on the broader society. This research aims to promote the concept of effective student bodies in Oman’s universities by studying the factors that affect student movements, conducting a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis, proposing a model, and outlining a practical activation plan. The study utilizes a qualitative descriptive approach, which involves in-depth interviews with key university stakeholders to grasp the challenges and needs of the student movement. The findings indicate that factors influencing student bodies include political systems, a lack of independence in association rights, and the requirement for approval from the university president. Opportunities for improvement include enhanced political and social awareness, advancements in technology, partnerships with government agencies, and increased recognition of student initiatives and community involvement. Challenges in developing student bodies may include member recruitment and retention, securing funding, and sustaining student activities. This chapter suggests a framework for cultivating the student movement with the assistance of faculty members, who can help nurture students’ leadership capabilities without intervening in the movement itself.
