The Role of the European Parliament in the Historical Background of Türkiye–EU Relations, Social Constructivism, and the Discourse-Historical Approach

This chapter first concentrates on understanding the EP, including its organization, powers, and political groups, and the impacts of parliamentary discourse within political discourse to highlight the importance of the EP in the EU, as well as the influence of the EP on Türkiye–EU relations. Second, the theory of social constructivism and its interaction with identity and discourse is discussed here. Concerning identity, it is contended that it can be understood in two ways: as sameness and distinctiveness from others and how the concepts of “the Self” and “the Other” are frequently used in exploring it. With regard to discourse, its importance for European integration as each nation’s interpretation of European discourses, which contributes to the success of the European project and for constructivism in crucial identity formations, is explained. At the end of the chapter, Wodak’s DHA is clarified through its history, relation with CDA, efforts in the field of politics with three main types of research, including the examination of identity constructions and changes of identities at national and transnational levels, and lastly, a three-dimensional approach.
