Navigating Parenthood: Malaysian Perspectives on Protecting Children from Paedophilia

The paedophilia issue is recognised as one of the heinous sexual abuse issues involving children at a very young age and its seriousness is undeniable which can lead to death. This issue has received a global highlight from various countries around the world including Malaysia. With the main argument that parents are the closest people to children and have the biggest obligations and responsibilities to uphold their children’s protection and privacy, this study aims at exploring parental goals, values and aspirations of Malaysian parents in upholding child protection and privacy to prevent the paedophilia issue; involving 12 key parents. Notably, there were several criteria which were considered in the selection process of key parents during the survey. The criteria were: (1) experienced parents in dealing with paedophilia; (2) parents who have unique parenting practices and styles in upholding child protection and privacy; and (3) parents who are willing to share their experiences and stories. Based on the interviews undertaken, this study finds that the majority of parents associated their goals, values and aspirations as protection, safety and security. However, due to lack of awareness and knowledge regarding the paedophilia issue, actions and monitoring efforts in protecting their children from paedophiles are still lacking. Nevertheless, this study believes that parents need to be liquid and flexible in today’s challenging world which later can be translated into effective parenting practices through embracing the diversity of culture in Malaysia.
