Bioprocessing and Market Aspects of Antimicrobial Peptides

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents a pressing global public health concern characterized by the emergence of microorganisms that have acquired the ability to withstand or tolerate the effects of antimicrobial agents and cause fatal diseases. Therefore, searching for new regimes with antimicrobial potential for treating these life-threatening infectious diseases, especially those caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains of microorganisms, becomes importunateness. In this context, the studies on antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in recent years are gaining attraction and unbolted a new field of research to combat all types of antimicrobial resistance. AMPs are biologically active oligopeptides with broad-spectrum mechanisms against different pathogens and are synthesized by all living organisms as part of innate immunity. These molecules appeal significantly to the pharmaceutical industry’s biopharmaceutical manufacturing endeavors due to their remarkable broad-spectrum antimicrobial capabilities and multifaceted attributes, such as anticancer, immunomodulatory, and other therapeutic properties. Apart from their pharmaceutical applications, the AMPs are also reported to have applications in the food industry. The key to harnessing the full potential of these applications and meeting market demand lies in the cost-effective large-scale manufacturing of AMPs. Different technological platforms are available for the successful bioprocessing development and manufacturing of AMPs, such as utilizing natural sources, recombinant technology, different strategies for optimizing bioprocess parameters in upstream and downstream processing, quality analysis of final product using state-of-art techniques, . Hence, the current chapter will address the bioprocessing aspects of manufacturing and market demand for AMPs.
