The Gig Economy Enigma: Uncovering the True Nature of Workers

Much has been written about gig economy workers since the Covid-19 pandemic; however, there is no specific understanding of who they are. However, until today, there is still no definitive consensus regarding this matter. The objective of this study was to explore the nature and definition of a gig economy worker. The methodology used in this study consisted of both doctrinal and qualitative approaches. The doctrinal approach involved extensive literature research ranging from articles, case laws, and legislations enacted locally and internationally. Meanwhile, the qualitative approach involved conducting semi-structured interviews with two employment law experts. Consequently, this study has concluded that gig workers are independent contractors with contracts for services.
