The Balance of Redundancy and Efficiency in a Resilient Supply Chain: Literature Review

Research in supply chain resilience suggests that organizations are facing more frequent and major disruptions that significantly impact their supply chain operations. There are several limitations to measuring the risk for events that cause disruptions in a supply chain. For managerial decision-makers, redundancy against efficiency has been the strategy to be resilient. Although most authors declare the importance of preparedness and anticipating mitigation action for vulnerabilities to design robustness that balances efficiency, we found a scarcity of papers focused on robustness. This chapter presents a systematic literature review on supply chain robustness methods and measurements to design a supply chain resilience. It structures and classifies existing research currents and application areas in this context by presenting and analyzing the results. A summary of the strategies and metrics found that may support managerial decision-makers toward a robust supply chain is presented.
