NGO Using Human Rights Based Approach for Sustainability in Developing Countries

The human rights-based approached is a well-developed topic about human rights in the developed countries. Recently this issue has shown some support by concerned actors and non-governmental organizations in the developing countries. This study aims to explore individual practitioners’ perceptions of the HRBA in NGO’s in a developing country, Lebanon. In this paper, our discussions focus on three human rights components in the HRBA approach that particularly play important roles for sustainable societies: participation and inclusion, non-discrimination and equality, and accountability. However, technologies have the potential to infringe on these human rights. Adopting a qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews conducted with 15 senior executives occupying key positions in one NGO in Lebanon, our research explores participants’ perceptions of HRBA. We conclude that technologies provides new avenues and insights for the NGO approach for sustainability and social strategy in a developing country. Theoretical and practical implications are also discussed.
