Surgical Decision-Making in Post-Bariatric Complications

Obesity is associated with serious health conditions emphasizing the necessity for interventions in managing the global health crisis. Surgery has been proven to be an effective tool in the management of morbid obesity. Obesity is not merely excess body fat, but a multifactorial syndrome leading to multiple health problems, including, but not limited to cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, and even certain types of cancer. When methods such as diet, exercise, and medications have failed, bariatric surgery has emerged as an effective treatment for obesity (Faria, Porto Biomed J [Internet]. 2:90–2, 2017). Multiple studies have shown substantial long-term benefits of bariatric surgery including sustained weight loss, remission or improvement of diabetes, reduction in cardiovascular risk factors, and even a decrease in mortality rates associated with obesity-related diseases.
