The Laboratory Diagnosis of Gastrointestinal Disease

Functional disorders of the gastrointestinal tract are estimated to afflict more than 40% of the adult population worldwide (Sperber et al., Gastroenterol 60:99–114, 2021). Although endoscopy is now a widely used procedure in the diagnostic workup of gastrointestinal disease, it is invasive, and clinical laboratory tests are still important in establishing the diagnosis of specific disorders.
