P. W. Joyce was appointed professor in the Science Department in the State Training Institute (the training college) in Dublin in December 1873. He retained that position until 1888 when, on the retirement of Dr O’Sullivan, he was appointed principal of the female branch. Moreover, until he retired in 1893, he maintained a very strong and influential position overall within the institute.
