Ten News Values for Climate Communication: From ‘Crisisation’ to Attribution, Emotional Offsets, Pragmatic Instructions and Punchy Storytelling
摘要
This chapter examines the pervasiveness and effects of social media fatigue, media overstimulation and the resulting effects of those on climate change awareness and interest. The concept of ‘crisisation’ is proposed and examined, with the comparison of the crisisation of other topics and the negative consequences of this practice—including the potential ‘OtheringOthering’ of the topic and disconnection of the audiences from it. There is a multi-layered analysis of the classic news values for journalism, which are challenged and adjusted for the age of climate change. The engagement with the theories of media dependency, agenda setting, uncertainty management and viral storytelling results in the forward-looking ten new news values suitable for the time of global heating. The approach is audience-respecting, with the acknowledgement of the resource limitations of newsrooms in attribution, capacity for original reporting and aweawe-inducing storytelling—and with the provision of the concrete paths for the improvement of climate coverage for sustainable audience engagement.
