Research in nuclear, particle and astro-particle physics has come a long way. Today’s experiments use highly sophisticated instruments utilizing the latest advances in technology or having developed new technologies themselves. In this book we will discuss the underlying physics of measurement techniques, detector technologies and sub-detectors. We assume that the reader has basic knowledge in particle physics, statistics and electronics. Excellent introductions to high-energy physics are given in the textbooks [1, 2]. We provide a short summary on statistics and multivariate analyses in Appendix B. For more information we recommend the reader to read the review articles in the Particle Data Group web page [3]. An excellent textbook on electronics is that by Horowitz and Hill [4].
