Clinical Blood Transfusion and Artificial Intelligence

Transfusion medicine (TM) is a relatively young medical discipline supporting a large number of medical specialties on an almost daily basis. In the routine of TM, large amounts of data are collected and processed in a routine and largely standardized way and depending on the economy of scale practiced. Blood and its components are not without risk when transfused. That burdens the decision-making and selection for transfusion. The field presents a promising challenge for the introduction of artificial intelligence through big data, deep learning artificial neural networks (ANN) and algorithms, and machine learning to improve the quality of decision-making and outcomes—safety and efficacy of clinical transfusion practice and patient well-being and comfort.
