Roman-born Marco Giallini has now become a prominent figure in Italian cinema and television series. He won three Nasti d’Argento with ACAB—All Cops Are Bastards and Posti in piedi in paradiso (one award for both films, in 2012), Tutta colpa di Freud (2014) and Perfetti sconosciuti (2016). He is also the protagonist of the successful TV series Rocco Schiavone (2016 to present). But the actor’s career has been troubled and fragmented. There are essentially two interesting elements that stand out in his professional path that will be explored in this chapter: first, his working-class background and his relatively late rise to success; second, the potential contributions that this background might have had on the development of his talent. For many years his cultural work experiences did not pay enough for a decent living, so Giallini found himself stuck in what is often called a boundaryless career, a work life that entails frantic jumps from project to project, but also from one sector to another (from theater stages or film sets to house painting). It will be shown that, to a certain extent, these life and work experiences might have contributed to his versatile talent, but the chapter also stresses the enduring importance of networking to break into the profession.
