In 2023 A-list actress Paola Cortellesi debuted as a film director with the box-office hit C’è ancora domani (There’s Still Tomorrow), a dramedy about female independence, which she also scripted together with her long-time collaborators Giulia Calenda and Furio Andreotti, and in which she stars in the role of a housewife in an abusive marriage. This chapter demonstrates how close analysis of the paratextual materials produced around Cortellesi’s earlier films, and especially her interview declarations, combined with a scrutiny of her previous career path would have made it possible to predict not only that she would have debuted as a director, but also that it would have happened with such a typology of movie. In so doing, the chapter discusses the increasing prominence that, since 2010, feminism acquired in Cortellesi’s star persona and shows how she has progressively moved from just generically conveying feminist values to more specifically bringing forward a reflection on gender equality. To achieve this repositioning, Cortellesi hasn’t only relied on the characters she has brought on screen; in fact, the chapter unearths how she levered as much on her off-screen activities, exploiting especially promotional interviews.
