During an interview on the casting process, Laura Muccino said that finding the right person for the role is not “like winning the lottery.” She explained how casting involves an elaborate process. This chapter takes a closer look at the career pathways of Muccino and Sara Casani, two of Italy’s most important casting directors who are known for discovering the “fresh faces” that star in several popular, exported television series such as My Brilliant Friend, Zero Zero Zero, Luna Nera, and Gomorrah (Casani assisted with Gomorrah). Borrowing from personal interviews with Muccino and Casani, special attention is paid to the gendered labor of casting directors given that close to 80% of casting directors in the US and in Italy are women. Moreover, Muccino and Casani’s casting process is discussed to shed light on the complex alliances between actor, character, and performance.
