An icon of Mediterranean femininity, an archetype of authentic romanità, an eroticized body, a symbol of heteronormative sexuality, an authoritative and comforting maternal figure, and a nostalgic embodiment of the Roman actress from the golden age of Italian cinema, Sabrina Ferilli is not simply an actress, but also a recognized star. The celebrity discourse constructed around Ferilli’s figure famously consecrated her as a “rural divinity” (Virzì), a sort of popular anti-diva whose multifaceted incarnations have been carefully tailored across media (cinema, TV, popular press, advertisement, and public events) and unified by authenticity. Based on traditional notions of transparency and sincerity, authenticity has continued to characterize Ferilli’s stardom in her ageing phase. Instead of going through the typical processes of desexualization and invisibility, Ferilli has challenged the “double standard of aging.” For example, in her latest films she has embodied the contradictions of postfeminist “distinctive sensibility” (Forever Young), incorporated sexual decadence and death in the discourse of romanità (The Great Beauty), and engaged in lesbian romantic comedy (Me, Myself and Her). This chapter examines how the discourse of authenticity has allowed Ferilli to negotiate with ageing, sexuality, and femininity to preserve the glamor and authority of her public persona, adding layers of complexity to her gendered performance.
