Sustainable Local Development: A Pathway to Social and Environmental Sustainability

The essential question that contemporary society must address is how to live-in harmony with nature. Modern society faces numerous socio-economic challenges and environmental issues together—the concern still needs to be addressed of how to bring environmental and social sustainability (ESS) without harming nature, despite limited natural resources. Therefore, in the last few years, the concept of sustainable local development (SLD) has emerged worldwide to tackle localized socio-economic challenges and environmental issues in a way that is sustainable for future generations. This chapter explores the concept of sustainable local development as an approach to addressing socio-economic challenges and environmental issues. This chapter explains how sustainable local development can be linked to global agendas and programs such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris Agreement, Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). It also highlights the importance of involving local communities and organizations in the planning and implementation of sustainable development initiatives program such as the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The chapter identifies common challenges faced in implementing sustainable local development, such as lack of coordinated and integrated planning, lack of capacity and resources, and lack of participation and engagement of local communities and stakeholders. It also examines strategies for overcoming these challenges, such as increasing funding, implementing policies and regulations, promoting public education and engagement, involving diverse stakeholders, and aligning sustainable development initiatives with global agreements and conventions.
