摘要

The shells from mussels are one of the main widespread biowaste related to fishing industry. Every year the worldwide consumption of fresh mussels accounts for around two million tons, generating a huge stream of waste shells that must be managed. To address this problem, research is exploring new approaches to reduce waste accumulation and convert shell waste into a valuable resource. Thus, considering that the calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is the main constituent of shells, in the present research an experimental application of powder from crushed and treated mussels’ shells is proposed within bituminous mixtures. The produced bio-filler is used in total replacement of limestone filler for the production of porous asphalt mixture. The results show that the mussels shell powder complies with the requirement for fillers in bituminous materials. Furthermore, the experimental filler has a positive effect on the mechanical properties of asphalt concrete, improving its cohesion and reducing the thermal sensitivity of the mixture. No detrimental effect on the workability properties was detected as well as on the final performance of the material. Therefore, it can be considered as a sustainable alternative to limestone filler for bituminous materials.
