Airfield Pavement Slippage Failure at High-Speed Exits

Slippage failure has been observed at high-speed exits of airfield pavements, which may be caused by the instability of asphalt mixture or interface delamination. It is critical to consider multiaxial stress state and material properties related to shear strength to understand the mechanism of pavement shear failure. This chapter investigates slippage failure mechanism through forensic study findings from previous failure cases and mechanistic analysis of pavement responses. The results indicate that shear failure caused by interface delamination is more possible to happen as compared to plastic deformation in asphalt surface layer.
