Field Performance of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavements and Shingles Combined with Warm Mix Technology: Evaluation of FHWA Accelerated Pavement Testing Sections

This study summarizes 6-year field performance results from FHWA’s 2013 Accelerated Loading Facility (ALF) test sections. A total of 11 lanes with different materials, including reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and reclaimed asphalt shingles (RAS) combined with warm mix technology, were constructed. Asphalt binders were extracted from cores in 100 mm asphalt concrete layers (50 mm top, 50 mm bottom) from different years and tested for high-temperature rutting and low-temperature cracking. The binders in the top layers exhibited more significant aging compared to those in the bottom layer. Lanes 3 and 7, which contained RAS, exhibited the most substantial decline in performance at both high and low temperatures. The sampling data suggest that these materials lack homogeneity. The performance degradation of binder materials containing RAP is consistently moderate and is not influenced by the warm mix asphalt (WMA) modification.
