Effect of Uncertainties in Input Structural Parameters and of Arbitrary Decisions by Analysts on the Results of Back-Calculated Pavements’ Resilient Moduli

This study aims to investigate the impact of uncertainties in input structural parameters on the estimated resilience modulus through back-calculation, thereby influencing the conclusions of nondestructive structural evaluation of pavements. Three reference structures with varying coating thicknesses were selected to determine the deflectometric basin using the falling weight deflectometer (FWD). Back-calculations were performed on these structures with variations in the input parameters: (i) layer thicknesses, (ii) Poisson’s ratios, and (iii) initial moduli. This procedure was repeated 30 times for each structure with randomized parameter variations. The resilience moduli obtained from the back-calculation were compared to those of the reference structures, and the relative errors were determined. Statistical and error propagation analyses revealed that uncertainties in layer thicknesses and Poisson’s ratios significantly impact the results of back-calculation, with dependence on the coating thickness, potentially leading to altered conclusions in the structural diagnosis of pavements.
