Could the Poly(Lactic Acid) Be a Ductile Material? Rheological and Mechanical Study

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) stands as a renewable, bio-based, and biodegradable aliphatic thermoplastic polyester, heralded as a promising substitute for petroleum-based polymers in a wide range of commodity and engineering applications. Nonetheless, PLA faces inherent brittleness, and relatively low impact strength, limiting its applicability when ductility is required. Consequently, several strategies have been developed to improve PLA ductility. However, few studies have been conducted on the evolution of the improved properties over time when stored at room temperature (ageing). Thus, in this study, the evolution of mechanical properties over aging time of a PLA blend with 20% wt. of an ester copolymer will be addressed. Moreover, the viscoelastic behavior of PLA in the rubbery state will be related to the evolution of the ageing.
