In this chapter, we summarize the arguments we made in the book for speculative reasoning and how it expands reasoning in design research. We provide a summary of our framework for speculation and the three methods for experiential alternatives we highlighted in the previous chapters. We then elaborate further on strategies and methods for speculative reasoning to guide future research practices. Strategies include countering, subversion, and estrangement. Methods include worldbuilding, counterstories, counterfactually, and empirical subjectivity in addition to those discussed in the earlier chapters: para-fuctional things, things that work otherwise, and materialized stories. Additionally, we map the methods and strategies to many of the projects we discussed in the book. Lastly, we discuss the implications of our arguments on ongoing and future research practices, and envision what design research might look like if we took seriously the importance of speculation.
