Psychoactive Medications in the ICU

Use of psychoactive medications is on the rise in communities. Consequently, substantial proportion of patients presenting to the ICU have history of use of these classes of medications. This chapter reviews basic pharmacology of commonly used psychoactive medications and provides an overview of specific considerations that are relevant for management of patients on these medications. Challenges of persistent use beyond the intended time frame and importance of stewardship are highlighted.
