Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSIs) represent a significant challenge in healthcare, contributing to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. The widespread use of Central Venous Catheters (CVCs) across various medical disciplines underscores the importance of effective strategies to mitigate the risk of CLABSIs. This chapter delves into the multifaceted approach required to prevent these infections, highlighting the evolution of awareness, the adoption of evidence-based practices, and the critical role of collaborative efforts in driving down CLABSI rates. The introduction of CVCs, while medically indispensable, has been paralleled by the recognition of CLABSIs as preventable. Historical data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and subsequent reductions in CLABSI rates illustrate the impact of concerted prevention efforts. The chapter outlines key strategies, including education and competency assessments for healthcare providers, the use of chlorhexidine in patient bathing and skin preparation, adherence to strict infection prevention protocols during CVC insertion, and the preference for subclavian site placement to minimize infection risks.
