The Impact of a Transdisciplinary STEAM Teacher Training Course on the Integration of Robotics in Early Childhood Education

To further enhance the integration of Robotics in Early Childhood Education (RiECE), teacher training emerges as a vital initiative. Nevertheless, the impact of the training programs necessitates comprehensive evaluation. This case study examines a transdisciplinary STEAM teacher training course that was carried out at Tallinn University in Estonia in the autumn of 2023. Data was collected via a questionnaire from 18 course participants. Quantitative data was analysed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data was analysed using thematic analysis. The findings demonstrate that the course had a positive impact on the participants regarding the integration of RiECE in Estonia. This was indicated by increased participant confidence, improved pedagogical abilities, and a favourable change in attitudes towards effectively implementing RiECE into classroom activities. The integration of collaborative learning, together with the fusion of theoretical and practical experiences, emerged as crucial factors enhancing the course's impact on the participants. Despite encountering challenges such as the language barrier and the limited availability of robots in classrooms, the university adeptly addressed these issues. This study exemplifies successful strategies in establishing teacher training programs for integrating robotics in the classroom, providing valuable insights that have the potential to enhance the overall integration of RiECE. Addressing the shortage of STEM professionals is particularly crucial in Estonia, given the country's growing need for skilled individuals in these fields.
