The Importance of Professional Development for International School Counselors

This chapter explores the in-depth training school counselors receive in a typical graduate program in order to prepare them for a profession and responsibilities in international schools. Through on-going professional development and following the profession’s ethical and professional standards, international school counselors are equipped to address the evolving needs of students and promote equity and access in the international schools where they serve. Moreover, this chapter explores the importance of on-going training to be effective in the themes that are critical for a school counselor’s effectiveness. Additionally, it explores the importance of the performance appraisal process and its effectiveness in highlighting areas of strength and growth. It further introduces the efforts of the International School Counselor Association’s objective in providing career-long professional learning and upskilling activities.
