The Anxious Underworld of Teacher Education: Reading and Representing the School Dream in Comics Form

This final chapter details an example of using dreams, as they appear in comics, as a method for materializing psychic complexity in teacher education. After conceptualizing the process of dreaming as a creative form of thinking, readers are introduced to a number of comics authored by undergraduate students, questioning what happens when spaces of schooling and dreaming collide. Paying particular attention to themes of time, space, and embodied performance, these dream-comics are understood as metaphorical gestures describing the subterranean experiences and anxieties of teacher education, whose shapes are given form—always uncertain and highly symbolic—as a consequence of the curious fact that the narrative structures of comics and dreams and the meanings that they provoke directly depend on the generative presence of gaps and fissures.
