Towards a Decolonizing Psychology: Reflexivity with Mothers and Adolescents from the Maya Region of Yucatán

The purpose was to understand the experiences of mothers and adolescents as maya individuals. It was carried out in a maya locality in Yucatán, Mexico, named Sihó. Through participatory activities with 28 young people and literary reception with the reading of the Popol Wuj with 12 mothers. The methodology gave rise to processes of hermeneutic understanding produced from the various enunciation positions that emerged in the process; it was a back-and-forth reflection from maya thought in dialogue with the participants. The result indicates that the relevance of the space for reflection and listening, because the reading allowed them to think of themselves as maya women, mothers and community leaders for their continuation and validity as a culture. Regarding adolescents, they position themselves as knowers of their mother culture, without yet falling into implication, they develop their lives from undeniable coloniality, mainly from the educational system, from there they constitute their challenges and future conditions. Mothers and young people navigate life between the coloniality and decoloniality of their own existence.
