Staff and pupils at Kilquanity and Wennington not only worked with their hands to look after the existing physical infrastructure, as explored in Chap. 2 , they also contributed to its actual creation—from wooden spoons, bedsteads and furniture, to works of art, skateboards, rockets, musical instruments and boats. Woodwork, pottery, art and sewing were ‘subjects’ in the timetable with dedicated lessons, spaces and teachers. Both headteachers celebrated this creative aspect of manual work as a developmental process for individual pupils, but also as a practical way for pupils to make what they needed for themselves and their communities.
