A Review of Effects of Driver-Vehicle Interactions on the Safety of Articulated Heavy Vehicles

This paper reviews the state-of-the-art studies on effects of driver-vehicle interactions on the safety of articulated heavy vehicles (AHVs). Various studies have been performed on the interactions of driver-vehicle for increasing the safety of single-unit vehicles (SUVs), e.g., passenger cars, rigid trucks, etc. AHVs represent a 7.5 times higher risk of traffic accident than SUVs in highway operations. However, much less attention has been paid to exploring effects of driver-vehicle interactions on the safety of AHVs. To increase the safety of AHVs, attempts have been made to design various active vehicle safety (AVS) systems for AHVs. The topics surveyed in this paper include: directional performance indicators, evaluation methods, driver models of AHVs, typical AVS systems, and effects of interactions of driver-vehicle on safety of AHVs. As a result of the review, future research directions and efforts are identified.
