Comparative Study of Battery Electric and Internal Combustion Engine Trucks: Analysis of CO2 Emissions

Electrification in the logistics and transport sector performed by urban trucks is already a reality in many countries. In general, commercial fleet electrification initiatives have been associated with CO2 emission reduction programs. In Brazil, CO2 reduction programs comprising incentives, credits, and tax rebates are still scarce; albeit, some actions have been implemented and may promote the electrification of trucks. The most widespread mode of transport is road transportation carried out by commercial trucks propelled at its totality by fossil fuels; these trucks are the main responsible for CO2 emissions. However, there is a lack of scientific studies that address the amount of CO2 emitted by heavy-duty trucks and support decisions concerning, e.g., public programs to reduce CO2 emissions. In this sense, this paper presents an experimental comparative study of an internal combustion engine truck and a battery electric truck, both operating in similar conditions in the São Paulo metropolitan region, with emphasis on CO2 emissions.
