摘要

Addressing the global challenge of providing adequate transport services within limited resources has prompted cities to invest in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Information and Communications Technology (ICT). These investments are aimed at optimizing the utilization of existing transport infrastructure, with the ultimate goal of improving transport services, reducing congestion, accidents, and air pollution, and ultimately achieving smart city status. This chapter focuses on identifying the key characteristics of smart cities and evaluating the impact of smart city initiatives on urban transportation systems and economic development. The findings reveal that smart city initiatives play a direct and indirect role in fostering economic growth by promoting transportation development and planning. Additionally, smart cities are characterized by social engagement, financial stability, data-driven decision-making, and a commitment to environmental sustainability. Consequently, smart cities hold great potential in addressing diverse challenges within the built environment.
