Transportation Development in the Global North: Lessons from Germany, United States of America and Singapore

Transportation issues are a significant concern for citizens and policy-makers in many developed and developing countries worldwide. This chapter examines the land transport policies implemented by Germany, the United States of America, and Singapore, aiming to alleviate urban transport problems and achieve sustainable development. The focus is on the actual implementation of policies and the valuable lessons learned from the experiences of these developed nations. The objective of this chapter is to identify the implementation processes and policy elements that can be effectively replicated in other developing cities worldwide, taking into account each city’s opportunities, constraints, and unique contexts. Findings reveal that these countries have introduced sustainable measures such as improving public transportation, implementing restrictions on car usage and single-occupancy vehicles, and embracing modern technologies in transportation planning. These approaches are aimed at promoting sustainable planning and serve as valuable examples for other cities to emulate.
