Beyond the Lips: Exploring Factors Influencing Lipreading Accuracy in Real-World Conversations

摘要

This article explores how humans visually interpret spoken words, diving into the fascinating field of lipreading. It explores the relationship between linguistic traits and the ease of lipreading by looking at the way the mouth produces sounds in Arabic, French, and English. According to the investigation, consonants with more subdued motions are often harder to lipread than vowels with identifiable lip shapes. But there can be issues due to inherent ambiguities and variances in speakers, such facial traits and speech habits. Environmental elements that can impede visual clarity include background noise and lighting. The paper then delves into how lipreading technology is being revolutionized by machine learning advances, namely in the area of deep learning architectures such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and 3D CNNs. Due to these models’ exceptional ability to extract features from lip movements, accuracy has significantly improved. Though potential solutions like data augmentation and transfer learning are mentioned, challenges including inadequate training data are acknowledged.
