The term ectopic pregnancy encompasses all pregnancies located outside of the endometrial cavity. Treatment includes options for medical or surgical management. Surgical management most commonly involves laparoscopic salpingectomy. Surgical complications can be avoided using medical management and appropriate selection of surgical candidates when appropriate. The major complications of ectopic pregnancy are hemoperitoneum and hemorrhage. Surgical decision-making involves the surgical route of laparoscopy or laparotomy which is generally determined by patient stability and surgeon experience. Salpingectomy is the most common surgical procedure performed, but salpingostomy is also a consideration in select patients. Additional complications from ectopic pregnancy include complications related to misdiagnosis, such as a nondiagnostic surgery or failure to recognize a nontubal ectopic pregnancy.
