Fecal incontinence (FI) is defined as uncontrolled passage of stool lasting for the duration of 3 months in a patient who previously had control. Severity and frequency of FI can be debilitating and have a great impact on one’s quality of life. Fecal incontinence is a well-documented symptom after obstetrical trauma, pelvic surgery, and pelvic radiation. Fecal incontinence is diagnosed by history and physical exam. Treatment starts with conservative management and escalates if needed to implantable devices, sacral nerve neuromodulator, sphincter repair, or colostomy.
