Technological Revolution 4.0 and New Forms of Political Communication and Information

The pervasiveness of new information technologies, particularly social media, has reshaped the landscape of political communication. These transformations not only impact the exchange of information, both in form and content, but also the roles of political actors in the international arena. Deregulation, the absence of hierarchies, and the high circulation of information characterize this new space where political exchanges occur, giving way to international debate and policymaking. This space allows previously voiceless collective actors, anonymous citizens capable of building nodes beyond their borders, and non-state organizations to participate, often for the first time. However, despite the potential benefits of these dynamics, the new model of political communication is not without its risks and challenges, such as disinformation, information sovereignty, and techlash.
