Book Censorship in Post-Civil War Spain

  • Julia Lin Thompson

摘要

This chapter offers an overview of the state censorship imposed on the publication of books for children and young readers in post-Civil War Spain. The major question to be tackled is this: How was censorship of children’s literature and its translation organised throughout the Francoist years in Spain? The analysis in this chapter will shed light on the major constraints of patronage to which the production of translations of Twain’s works was exposed during the Francoist years. Meanwhile, it is also intended as a basis for the examination of the specific censorial suppressions imposed on the translations of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn in subsequent chapters.
