The Lateral Collateral Ligament and the Posterolateral Ligament Complex

The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) is part of a complex of fibers on the lateral and posterolateral aspect of the knee accounting for stability to varus stress. Each of the lateral structures can be identified and techniques for visualization have been well established. “The complex anatomy of the posterolateral corner of the knee is due largely to the evolutionary changes in the anatomic relationships among the fibular head, the popliteus, and the biceps femoris muscle.” Seebacher et al published a thorough article on the anatomy of the posterolateral corner of the knee. With proper diagnosis, injury patterns can be identified, and therapeutic approaches can be well planned.
