The Reflectance of Solar Light from Natural Surfaces

The reflectance of solar light from natural targets is anisotropic, and this reflectance anisotropy can be quantified by the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF). The surface BRDF is a key to the interpretation of land surface characteristics by optical remote sensing. Accurate BRDF modelingBRDF modeling of land surface is the basis and prerequisite of quantitative remote sensing, which can be used to correct the angle effects and estimate various surface parameters. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out the BRDF modeling for different surface covers (e.g., soil, vegetation, and snow) to represent the BRDF characteristics of different natural objects, and retrieve various surface parameters. This chapter introduces the definition of BRDF commonly used in remote sensing and describes the basic radiative transfer theory of surface BRDF modelingBRDF modeling. Finally, the current surface BRDF modeling and parameter inversion problems are summarized and discussed.
