Sexual Health in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs)

This chapter delves into the topic of sexual health in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), exploring the elements that constitute effective sexual healthcare. It discusses key components of comprehensive sexual healthcare, emphasising the need for inclusivity, confidentiality and culturally sensitive approaches that address the well-being of individuals. The chapter examines barriers that hinder sexual health coverage in LMICs, highlighting socio-economic disparities and limited access to information and services as prominent challenges. It underlines the importance of tailored strategies to overcome these barriers and strengthen sexual healthcare accessibility. The roles of contraception, safe abortion and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention measures are also considered. This includes the need for comprehensive family planning initiatives, de-stigmatising abortion and fostering awareness about STI prevention. Additionally, the chapter investigates the implications of infertility on sexual health, considering ways it can impact on individuals and relationships. Lastly, the chapter explores the interconnectedness between gender-based violence and sexual health. It sheds light on how violence exacerbates sexual health disparities and the urgency of addressing gender inequality as a crucial step towards promoting sexual health and well-being.
