Nutrition Risk Screening Tools

  • Giorgio Fullin

摘要

Nutritional risk screening tools are indispensable instruments in healthcare settings, employed to identify individuals at risk of malnutrition. These tools use a systematic approach to assess various factors, including dietary intake, weight loss, and the presence of underlying diseases, to evaluate a person’s nutritional status. By efficiently identifying those at risk, healthcare professionals can implement timely interventions, such as dietary counseling, nutritional support, and monitoring, ultimately improving patient outcomes. Several screening tools, such as the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST), have been developed and validated for different populations, providing healthcare providers with valuable tools to address nutritional risk and enhance overall patient care. In this chapter, we discuss the reasons nutritional risk screening tools are commonly used in critical care. We briefly explore the validation process and then discuss the different tools available today, highlighting which ones have proven preferable in the specific context of intensive care.
