Acute Kidney Disease

Acute kidney disease (AKD) is a concept that has been developed to describe kidney dysfunction lasting for less than 3 months in time that bridges a gap between acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Importantly, AKD represents a time period when the prediction and prevention of future adverse long-term kidney and general health outcomes may be targeted. We will describe the development of the AKD concept and its relevance to critical care physicians and discuss potential management goals for patients with AKD.
