Enteral Nutrition Overview and Formula Selection Considerations
摘要
The critically ill patient, grappling with multiple severe pathologies and insufficient vital functions, undergoes a complex interplay of metabolic and hormonal imbalances, marked by a state of hypercatabolism. This cascade of physiological disruptions often results in significant deficiencies of both macro and micronutrients. Introducing exogenous nutrients through early enteral nutrition (EN) has the potential to mitigate or even reverse some of these pathophysiological cascades, effectively curbing the catabolic state. The nutrient compositions, present in various quantities and forms in commercially available mixtures, may include special substrates designed to facilitate recovery and ameliorate certain metabolic abnormalities. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding of the products intended for treating critically ill patients and their judicious use proves invaluable in therapeutic management. This knowledge can significantly contribute to improving patient outcomes by optimizing nutritional support and addressing the specific challenges posed by the intricate metabolic landscape of critically ill individuals.
