Implementation Operating Room Preparation and Trauma

In preparation for adult trauma services, ready availability of an available operating room was essential for emergencies. A tremendous amount of preparation and education occurred to ensure smooth functioning of the trauma service. Numerous resources and teams outside of the Surgeon, Nursing, and Anesthesiologist play integral roles in trauma operations, including sterile processing and supply chain. To accommodate the addition of this new service line, a case classification system was developed for emergencies. A classification system ranging from A-D was created. “Class A” designation represented the most serious operative emergency requiring immediate operating room access to save life or limb. In addition, the trauma service secured a fixed trauma room that was stocked with supplies. However, when multiple patients require surgical interventions, the additional flow of patient means entering another operating room immediately. A Room after First Trauma was developed if all operating rooms are occupied. Careful advanced planning for various contingencies is critical for smooth operating room management.
