Biomarkers in Psoriasis

PsoriasisPsoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition involving the overactivation of the innate and adaptive immune responses. Its dermatological manifestations greatly reduce patients’ health and quality of life. While there may be no cure for psoriasis yet, many biomarkersBiomarkers have been identified in the bloodBlood and tissueTissue of psoriasis patients, the levels of which may be informative about diagnosisDiagnosis, prognosis, treatmentTreatment efficacy, and monitoring comorbidities in this condition. These biomarkers include keratinKeratin proteins, apoptotic proteins, and several inflammatory mediators like cytokines and TNF-α. Many genetic biomarkers for psoriasis that may inform susceptibility to the condition have also been researched and discovered. These geneticGenetic markers play a role in the pathogenesis and maintenance of psoriasisPsoriasis. While no gene therapy has been developed to reduce the expression of these genes, these biomarkers serve as important indicators of disease progression and response to treatmentTreatment. The chapter will further expand on the role of biomarkers in psoriasis and its pathogenesis as well as its possible role in the future development of drug therapy.
