This introductory chapter sets the stage for the edited collection and provides a framework for all the case studies reported in the book. The content is divided into three key discussion areas: the historical development of co-creation concepts, the perceived benefits and challenges of co-creation in higher education practices, and an applied definition of co-creation based on its unique features. While reflecting on gaps between the concepts and practices of co-creation, the chapter sheds light on the role of academic environment, staff and student identities, and the value of relationship. Additionally, it discusses the importance of evaluating co-creation schemes for achieving realistic understanding and transferable strategies, particularly for academic enhancement and effective student learning in higher education.
